Extreme temperatures in historically milder cities, such as reaching 45C in London, are inevitable and will cause intense human suffering from heat stress, heatstroke, and even death. We need to plan now to avoid catastrophic consequences later. The goal of the SolACE (Solar Air-Conditioned Environment) project is to create a global suite of site-specific socio-technical solutions elicited by means of a set of challenge-style competitions. Our first step is to create a template for such a competition and pilot it in Cambridge, then use this to refine the template, share it openly, so that similar competitions can be run elsewhere.

SOLACE: Addressing extreme urban heatwaves

Extreme urban temperatures, due to a combination of heatwaves and the urban heat island effect, are inevitable now, and will result in unprecedented conditions, such as reaching 45C every day for two weeks in London. This will cause intense human suffering from heat stress, heatstroke, and even death. We need to plan now to avoid catastrophic consequences later. The goal of the Solace project is to create a global suite of location-specific solutions that encompass both technical and non-technical aspects. Our vision is to crowd-source solutions using challenge-style competitions run around the world. Our first step is to create a template for such a competition and pilot it in Cambridge, then use this to refine the template, share it openly, so that similar competitions can be run elsewhere.
